If on one hand, “La Sirène du Mississipi” is not Truffaut’s best, on the other, it is remarkable better than many films we watch nowadays — say, the quasi-remake of this, called “Novel Sin”, starring Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas. Both films are based on Willian Irish’s –or, if you will, Cornell Woolrich’s — “Waltz into Darkness”. But the similarities demolish here. While Truffaut is an consume of style and suitable taste, the other, directed by Michael Cristofer, is so meaningless that is almost crude.

The position is very simple, but at the same time catching. A man from Reunion Island orders a mail bride. So the whole relationship is dominated by her, once she is very strong and persuasive. One positive example of this is when they are buying a car. He is clear he wants the silver one, that would be more discreet, but she wants the red one… guess which one they bewitch! So, don’t be fooled, this is a Catherine Deneuve’s indicate. She is dazzingly in her Yves Saint-Laurent. She dominates the frames in every scene she is in! And even some she is out.

Another thing, many people may not understand the inequity between “tu” and “vous” in this film. It is not a mistake! The writer meant to exhibit different periods in their relationship. When they are terminate –things are fine– they expend `tu’, but sometimes they employ `vous’, particulary, after spending a time apart– this means how distant from each other –as a curious — they became.

Truffaut’s work is as always very effective and very creative. In the very beginning he does an homage to Jean Renoir, using some footage of his “La Marseillase” introducing Reunion Island. Although this film is meant to be a thriller, in the destroy, it is great more a treasure anecdote. A tragic admire fable of a like that probably shouldn’t have happened. We also have to eye how hidden and subtle the sexuality is, in this movie — as in most of Truffaut’s woks. Some of his films may be virtually sexless, but if you inspect it very stop, you will inspect sparkles of like everywhere.

As a devoted fan of François Truffaut, every film he made, interests me. This “Mississipi Mermaid” makes no exeception. It is enthralling, spellbinding and disturbing. “Care For hurts? “, somebody asks in the film. “Yes, it does, when I peer at you, you are so fair that hurts me. [...] it is a joy and a suffering”. As most of his movies: they are a joy, but they also injure us, once they expose how human nature and like can be.

Although Mississippi Mermaid was considered one of Truffaut’s losers, it has charm and the personalities of the characters will pause with you. It’s clearly better than its reputation. Said to be influenced by Hitchcock and then rendered in the Truffautian style, it is a runt off the beaten track, and the coincidences are a slight ridiculous. Nonetheless Catherine Deneuve is outstanding and strangely at home in a role considered by many to be out of character for her, as though Grace Kelly might play Bonnie in “Bonnie and Clyde.” This comes five years after Deneuve charmed audiences in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), and two years after her success in Belle de Jour (1967) . She stars here as a skanky ex-home girl with a murderous heart… For all her resplendent beauty Deneuve does manage to gawk cheap and almost sleazy. In some ways she comes to life in this role more than in any other I’ve seen. Certainly I’ve never seen her sexier.

Co-star Jean-Paul Belmondo is interesting as a slightly sweet and naive tobacco farmer from Reunion Island (approach Madagascar) who gets Deneuve as a mail order bride, she and her poor boyfriend having first dumped the exact mail order bride overboard en route. If you’ve never seen Belmondo you should since he was a sensation in his prime, something like a French Marlon Brando.

This was objective an improbable episode from a hit or miss series. The acting by George Wendt was colorful. There are many twists, some arrive very early on, but the final one caught me design off guard (which is hard to do) . Family is noteworthy better than last seasons Deer Woman, though I enjoyed that one as well. I hope John Landis tops this one next season.

This entry in the Masters of Apprehension series is basically a suburban play on the movie ‘Psycho.’ George Wendt of ‘Cheers’ fame is your average, polite neighbour who is secretly killing people and setting up their skeletons as his bear ‘family.’ When a novel couple moves in down the road, he becomes obsessed with the hot wife and decides to add her to his collection.

‘Family’ mixes elements of apprehension, suspense, and satire. I agree with other reviewers that it doesn’t ever focus enough on one element to truly standout in that category, but it’s aloof an spicy narrative with a strong script and marvelous direction. The acting is solid, and it’s fun to recognize George Wendt assume on this kind of role.

This movie was beyond snide. I can’t say enough poor things about it. If you’ve read the book first you will know what I’m talking about. Why they would ever cast Britany Murphy as Cilla McGowen is beyond me. She is nothing like the character in the book. Cilla is expansive, blond and with ice blue eyes. Murphy is short with brown eys. And that actor who played Ford Sawyer was a complete inconvenience. The acting was nefarious. Who ever wrote the script and directed this should be ashamed for tearing apart a totally improbable book until it became absolutely unrecognizable on film. I would give it less than one star if I could. Skip this movie and choose the book. You won’t feel you’ve wasted your time.

Tribute mixes the corny acting of a soap opera with the comic scares of a B-horror movie. The movie descends into a drama about a 30-year-old suicide/murder. Despite the description of the movie, the whole “child actor” drama doesn’t really play as grand a role.

The acting is pleasing lame. Jason Lewis doesn’t advance across as a comforting boyfriend, but rather as a stalker in his have correct. Maybe it’s his deplorable allege, or the fact that he looks at Brittany Murphy with binoculars. Nonetheless, he doesn’t work well. Brittany Murphy isn’t corrupt, but not compelling - almost as if she were the child actor who finish acting.

The movie leaves loose ends everywhere. One of Brittany Murphy’s friend’s is knocked out and lying in a hospital, but by the kill of the movie we level-headed don’t know what happened to him. There are others, but I won’t converse them for awe of spoiling the state.

With the new remastering and re-releasing of the burly Band canon, interest in one of America’s greatest musical acts has never been higher. This is as beneficial a time as any to purchase up a copy of “The Band,” one in Rhino records series called “classic Albums,” which documents the making of classic albums. (other dvd’s include the Wailers, the Who, and the Grateful Dumb) This dvd documents the classic lp “The Band” from 1969.

Filled with vintage footage of the Band in rehersals, as well as interviews with Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, the reclusive Garth Hudson, and the leisurely Rick Danko, “The Band” chronicles the making of this astonishing album, focusing on the disparate musical influences- country, bluegrass, rockabilly, shadowy R&B, rock n roll, and folk/Americana- that led to many of guitarist/vocalist Robbie Robertson’s greatest songs.

I understand why someone who is looking for a vast film would be disappointed. Howard the Duck is no Saving Private Ryan or English Patient. Thankfully not all films are or we’d be really bored. What Howard The Duck IS is inspiring. It’s a guy in a duck suit…so what? It’s graceful silly and refreshingly scrumptious to behold. It is a well made B-movie…so if you survey at it on that level then it’s a lot of fun. And it’s not top-notch to compare the film which is aimed at a young audience to the droll which was very adult. Two different things entirely…really, if there were enough fans of the comical (and I’m one) then there would be a recent, adult version of Howard. I don’t leer that happening. So indulge in the film for what it is. I hope the DVD does it justice.

This is one of the most well known, whether you’ve seen it or not, films of all time. 23 Years ago George Lucas was one of the hottest producer/writer/directors in Hollywood thanks to his involvement with the current Star Wars trilogy and Indiana Jones. Everything he touched turned to gold. He started his have sound and effects companies that revolutionised the business and the diagram in which films are made, and he aloof does that today. Then came the deplorable Howard The Duck. Even when it was announced some were unsure why Lucas would gravitate to such an offbeat plan(originally an equally offbeat and satirical Marvel laughable) . Then, the reports of the budget and reshoots(which thanks to this edition, you accumulate out was due to the limitations of the fresh Howard puppet) had the skeptics reeling even more. Every writer would design positive to imprint the colossal budget of the film, as if it was relevant to anyone at all. I study some reviewers here on Amazon seem to expend how mighty a film cost to deride it or how remarkable it made to champion it, as if that says anything about the film itself. Independence Day was and is a unpleasant film but it made a tons of money when it was released. The proper test of a honorable film or a film that trancends is time.

It’s been over twenty years since Howard The Duck graced the silver cover and became one of the biggest and, apparently, most expenssive flops of all time. Everyone seems to know this movie. Novel generations who watched it on cable don’t know a damn thing about the film’s reviews or place befriend in the 80’s and fair catch it for what it is: an extremely funny, farcical, goofy, sci-fi,fish out of water comedy, action adventure, scare movie. I saw this when I was really young and even at that young age I level-headed knew something of what a flop this flick was, that’s how hardcore the criticism was. Hell, there was an episode of Exiguous Toon Adventures that had characters on the boxes in a video store coming to life, and one of them dilapidated the Howard The Duck video cassette as a bomb to terminate an enemy(Accept IT?!?!? HA!HA!)

Well, I quiet dont’ rep why this film was hated so mighty. I kind of score that it wasn’t easily stuffed into convenient packaging. Was it a kids film? No, not really. It contains too powerful sexual humor, and innuendo to be. Was it a comedy? Yes, but it had some trusty and scary moments. Was it for an adult audience? Sort of. It was for anyone, but it seemed as though it would only appeal to those who feel like they’re on the fringe of the norms in society. They can narrate to its steal no prisoners, anything goes reach to filmmaking and storytelling. That’s the tag. That’s why it’s a cult film now. An acquired taste produced to be a enormous hit, but ended up only interesting to a tiny few.

The dvd itself is resplendent. The transfer is pristine. Surprisingly, the old-school effects absorb up to the digital transfer. Phill Tippet’s halt motion monsters at the destroy serene behold wintry and the digital shipshape up doesn’t fabricate them spy as arcane as one might seek information from. I’ve always opinion John Barry’s obtain was titanic. It level-headed is. This film’s obtain is one of the most memorable and creative, but due to the film’s reputation it never got the kudos it deserves. In one scene there’s enormous comedy and puns, and then a sweet scene between Howard and Lea Thompson, followed by the awkwardness of a romance between a duck and a human, which is all scored appropriately and it works. There are two fresh featurettes on the disc. One is a retrospective doc, running about a half hour, about the making of the film and its development. We gather the whole creative team of writer director Willard Huyck, writer/producer Gloria Katz(the writing team unhurried American Grafitti and Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom), actors Leah Thomson, Ed Gale(Howard), and Jeffrey Jones. I believe it’s sooo frigid that they all participated in this and weren’t jumpy to openly say that they liked the film. There’s a second featurette about the reaction to the film, it’s reviews and box-office receipts. This one is fun too and it incorporates all those interview in previous featurette. Finally, we net the usual trailers and EPK materials from the film’s unusual release.

I got this disc for 12 bucks. If you like or cherish this film then it’s a must. If you’re mildly involved or you appreciate alternative cinema then it’s a must as well. If you are tranquil a hater from benefit in the day, then why the hell would you be reading this anyway?

PS: Rewatching the film yesterday, I really started missing the stop-motion effects that all but disappeared relieve in the mid 90’s. The effects are so suited, detailed, weighty, and other-worldly that I unbiased smiled through the whole ruin sequence. Positive, CGI has it’s residence for a lot of things it does large or brilliantly(Benjamin Button, Gladiator etc.) but when it comes to creature or monsters or aliens does it behold any more precise in CGI? I don’t know. I always know when I’m looking at something that’s fully CGI and I know it’s not really there. I felt the same intention about traditional school effects. Gollum from the Lord of the Rings trilogy came closest in that regard,but that’s about it. Objective something to ponder if you will….

It shouldn’t be bought, not because is abominable but because is heavily censored - some 30 min missing - and because those people they beleive they have the factual to treat the customer like an ignorant and immature child should purchase a message. It is offending to our intelingence and dignity to be supervised by an invisible censor who desides before us, for us what is superior to look and what is not. Myself i don’t secure to be treated like that and i back everybody to avoid buying censored products as offencive to our intelingence and that of the creator artist. Is a phaenomenon that should be eliminated and it will be if our behaviour as customers is sensitive. Apart from that is of a diminutive importance if the film is reliable or not. Yes it is! so what?

Having explored familiar heterosexual obsessions in well-regarded softcore dramas like CAMILLE 2000 (1969) and THE LICKERISH QUARTET (1969), director Radley Metzger upped the sexual ante with Regain, a good-natured bisexual romp which crosses the boundary into hardcore territory, recently poularized in US theaters by the likes of DEEP THROAT and THE DEVIL IN MISS JONES (both 1972) . Based on a play by screenwriter Jerry Douglas, Gather tells the legend of swinging couple Claire Wilbur and Gerald Grant, who fabricate a bet that they can seduce freshly-scrubbed newlyweds Lynn Lowry and Calvin Culver during a weekend get-together at their luxury Riviera villa. Having plied the hapless duo with drink nd soft drugs (”I’m not a very proper junkie!” Lowry complains) and dressed them in costumes which tally with their sexual fantasies (cowboy, nun, sailor, etc.), Wilbur and Lowry pair off for a lesbian encounter, while Grant and Culver topple into the basement bedroom for a full-blown contented seduction.

Artfully photographed by Metzger himself and extinct cinematographer Franjo Vodopivec on plot in Yugosalvia, and framed as an adult fairy myth (the savory opening narration locates the action “…in the lush diminutive land of Plenty, in the enviable status of Affluence… deep within the Erogenous Zone”!), the movie is famous by clever dialogue which removes frail notions of sexual parameters from the outset. When asked how she differentiates between sexes during the orgies she’s attended in the past, Wilbur replies: “First you don’t know, then you can’t dispute, then you don’t care!”

The region is wafer-thin, and the acting is merely OK (the women fare best in this regard), but Douglas’ script - played out for the most share in a single interior area, with only a handful of outdoor sequences - allows Metzger to beget slowly and surely to the climactic double seduction, using reflective surfaces (amongst other devices) to hiss sexual dualities within the characters. Viewers hoping for a non-stop flesh-fest may be irritated by the long story preamble (punctuated by Wilbur’s rough-house topple with studly repairman Carl Parker), but there’s unruffled plenty of uncompromising nudity, and the film manages to stimulate the brain whilst simultaneously tickling your, er… care for. Substantial music, too, including an ultra-groovy (and uncredited) theme song!

Unfortunately, the most widely-circulated print - which bears a 1976 copyright - is the softcore version. Metzger reportedly prefers this prick of the film, but the all-important sex scenes are seriously compromised by jarring edits and clear gaps in the soundtrack. The film remains a worthwhile curio, but its erotic potency has been severely blunted by unnecessary censorship.

Fascinating trivia: ‘Calvin Culver’ is actually contented porn star Casey Donovan, who made his name in groundbreaking titles like BOYS IN THE SAND (1971) and THE OTHER SIDE OF ASPEN (1978), though he later re-temaed with Metzger for the director’s hardcore masterpiece THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN (1976) . Co-star Gerald Grant only appeared in two other films (Metzger’s NAKED CAME THE STRANGER [1975] and Umberto Lenzi’s EATEN ALIVE [1980]), and it’s unlit to relate that both he and Donovan have since passed away. Claire Wilbur featured in the unique stage version of Catch, but her only other shroud acting credit appears to be TEENAGE HITCH-HIKERS (1974), while the glowing Lynn Lowry has since pursued a career in mainstream movies, including THE CRAZIES (1973), SHIVERS (1975) and CAT PEOPLE (1982) . Writer Jerry Douglas adopted the pseudonym ‘Doug Richards’ and made a name for himself in jubilant porn, writing and directing a number of eminent productions, including THE Assist ROW (1973), BOTH WAYS (1976) and MORE OF A MAN (1991), the latter featuring Joey Stefano and Chi Chi LaRue, while SCORE’s production manager Branko Lustig has since become a major Hollywood producer, with titles like SCHINDLER’S LIST (1993) and GLADIATOR (2000) to his credit!

Hitler’s War is a very informative documentary. I had seen some of these clips before, but not as excellent in record quality as you will witness here. You eye footage of Hitler giving speeches with English subtitles, which is always keen to search for. Although I disagree with his actions, his bravery and dedication to improving Germany held obliging intentions (unfortunately, he chose a path of slaughter to approach his goals) . Immense archival footage of soldiers fighting, planes dropping bombs, Hitler leading his followers, buildings burning, and hostages being shipped away (never to be seen again) .

This DVD shows what phenomenal musicians Scorpions truly are. The music selection is perfect, with a few modern tunes thrown in. They cloak songs from Kansas and The Cars as well. I listen to the DVD over and over. Sometimes I throw it in for background music it’s so respectable. I wasn’t positive at first if this would be any ample. There are some acoustic performances out there that aren’t that noble, trying to consume on the trend location by Tesla long ago.

Production quality is friendly, with many cameras state to screen the performance. Also, there is footage from attend stage, etc… If you are a Scorpions fan, or objective a fan of quality rock and roll, you will very delighted with this CD.

This DVD (and also CD with abt. 75 % of songs) was recorded live in Portuguese monastery more or less “unplugged” (bass guitar was mostly electric though) . Fresh acoustic arrangements gave aged classics a novel life, plus there are 2 or three novel songs and three cover-versions: Dust in the Wind (”Kansas” novel), Drive (from “Cars”) and Appreciate of my Life (’Queen’, of course) . Total of 21 tracks, and I should say that 17 or 18 of them are played genuine reliable. Five members of the band plus one (Brazilian? ) percussionist, one extra ac. gtr. player, a keyboard/orchestrations/arrangements wizard, three background singers and a girl with cello (unfortunately, we can hear her only accasionally - thanks to Mr. Soundman) . Ah, and last but not the least: spacious audience and unbelievable dancers!

There are some interviews also, and I remove talking to Messrs. Meine & Schenker during Moscow Music peace festival in 1988 (or was it 1989? - I should check, I serene got memorable T’shirt from the event ) and singing “Wind of Change” together.

Picture is exellent, but the sound - well, PCM Stereo is true advantageous, 5.1 Dolby is not poor, but 5.1 DTS is really something: thanks to Mr. Soundman again I’ve had unforgettable experience - vocals from central channel (OK), gtrs from left and fair front speakers (too mild!) and very loud keyboards from left and fair rear speakers!!! A right coast in the ointment, because on CD the sound is OK.

But anyway, this is a really estimable live DVD with different acoustic sound from the band of endless hits.

Try it and you won’t be disappointed.

This 1995 made for TV movie is millions of miles away from the tacky propaganda-filled 1963 film. This version follows the exact record and doesn’t leave out any key parts or songs. The casting was done well, especially Tyne Daly as Mae Peterson (hilarious) and the actor who plays Conrad Birdie–an improbable articulate! George Wendt plays the role of Mr. MacAfee and not only can he yell but is a riot in the Ed Sullivan scene. However, Chynna Phillips is not a ample choice for Kim–she looks too extinct, her singing yell is only so-so (Kim’s songs have all been lowered an octave) and the diagram she interpreted the role made Kim seem snotty. One of the best scenes is when Ursula and co. are doing “Bye Bye Birdie” at the malt shop–their voices and enthusiasm are astonishing. All in all, it’s a gargantuan display, well-behaved viewing for anyone wanting to execute or teach the musical.

Unlike the 1963 film of the same name, this 1995 made-for-television movie of the classic musical stays suitable to the source. The film contains unbiased about everything from the stage musical plus three current songs. The acting is expansive, the songs are a blast, and the settings/scenery retract the town of Sweet Apple, Ohio perfectly.

Tyne Daly as Mae Peterson, George Wendt as Mr. McAfee, and Vanessa Williams as Rose Alvarez are perfect.Jason Alexander is a delight as Albert Peterson, but seemed to have distress with some of the songs and I therefore liked Dick Van Dyke’s Albert from the unusual film better. Chynna Philips, on the other hand, honest doesn’t seem believable as Kim: she appeared design too faded and honest couldn’t hit the fair notes of her songs. Ann-Margaret was by far the better Kim. Also, I didn’t like the fact that Hugo carried a guitar around (too Conrad Birdie wannabee, which Hugo definitely is not) and the scene at the extinguish of the play where Kim announces her engagement to Hugo was cleave. Other than that, the film really has no flaws.

This version of BYE BYE BIRDIE is far profitable to the unique. At honest around two hours, it’s unprejudiced like watching the play, but in your beget home.
